Extraordinary housing costs in the San Diego metropolitan area prevent the majority of enlisted and junior officers from purchasing adequate housing. Affordable housing that is also accessible is extremely scarce.
Active duty service members may be eligible for a monthly housing stipend. Discharged veterans may be eligible for benefits based on the severity of their disability and active duty pay grade. However, the lag time between discharge and benefit determination may be several months.
Service members and veterans with families have additional challenges to be met.
