Program Need

There is a critical need for community-based housing and transitional services in the San Diego area for service members, many of whom have been wounded in combat and who have recently received significant medical care and may continue to require ongoing medical care and therapy.

The Community Catalysts Veterans Transitional Services (CCVTS) program provides temporary housing and services for individuals from up to 6 months before being discharged from active duty and up to 2 years after discharge to ensure a successful transition into civilian life.

Background

Service members entering C5 (Comprehensive Combat and Complex Casualty Care Center) at Balboa Regional Medical Center are eligible for housing at military quarters until their discharge from active duty. Service members with families who are stationed elsewhere may have additional needs.

Some members, in a Medical Hold status awaiting final Medical Discharge, may benefit from living in a more independent setting.

C5 may have up to six persons in the unit and an additional 50 or more individuals may be in medical hold.

After medical discharge, some individuals may require ongoing therapy and medical support from Balboa and VA facilities and contractors in the area.
